The o-ring remains the most cost-effective sealing element available for pressurized assemblies.

Silicone is specified for an exceptionally wide service temperature range, physiological inertness and low toxicity. The compound resists extreme heat and cold, dry heat, and weathering. Published continuous service range is -80°F (-62.2°C) to 450°F (232.2°C). Applications involving concentrated acids or steam above its rated range call for a different compound.
