It compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

Silicone is specified here for flexibility that holds at very low temperatures and exceptionally wide service temperature range. The compound resists weathering, ozone and UV exposure, and many oxidizing chemicals. Continuous operating temperature is published at -80°F (-62.2°C) to 450°F (232.2°C).
