The o-ring compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

Buna-N (Nitrile) offers the most widely specified general-purpose sealing elastomer and low compression set under sustained load. The material holds up against water, propane and butane, and greases and lubricants. Service temperature is rated from -40°F (-40°C) through 250°F (121.1°C). Applications involving strong acids or polar solvents call for a different compound.
