An o-ring compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

Buna-N (Nitrile) is widely chosen for low compression set under sustained load and the most widely specified general-purpose sealing elastomer. The compound resists hydraulic fluids, greases and lubricants, and propane and butane. Service temperature is rated from -40°F (-40°C) through 250°F (121.1°C). Applications involving polar solvents or strong acids call for a different compound.
