The o-ring compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

This material stands up to solvents, strong acids and bases, and oxidizing media. That behavior comes from the compound itself: PTFE (Teflon) is valued for a very wide continuous service temperature range and near-universal chemical inertness.
