It compresses into its gland to block fluid or gas migration across a joint.

PTFE (Teflon) is specified for near-universal chemical inertness and a very wide continuous service temperature range. The compound resists solvents, nearly all industrial chemicals, and steam. Continuous operating temperature is published at -65°F (-53.9°C) to 500°F (260°C). Verify compatibility before use with elemental fluorine at temperature or service requiring elastic recovery.
