The o-ring seats in a machined groove and forms a leak-tight barrier when compressed between two mating surfaces.

Silicone is specified here for exceptionally wide service temperature range, physiological inertness and low toxicity. The compound resists extreme heat and cold, many oxidizing chemicals, and weathering. Published continuous service range is -80°F (-62.2°C) to 450°F (232.2°C).
