It provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

Silicone is specified here for very good compression set resistance across its range and flexibility that holds at very low temperatures. It resists extreme heat and cold, many oxidizing chemicals, and ozone and UV exposure. The material carries a published service range of -80°F (-62.2°C) to 450°F (232.2°C). It should not be specified for service in abrasive dynamic service or concentrated acids.
