It provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

As a material, Silicone is specified for flexibility that holds at very low temperatures and an exceptionally wide service temperature range. The material holds up against dry heat, many oxidizing chemicals, and ozone and UV exposure. Published continuous service range is -80°F (-62.2°C) to 450°F (232.2°C).
