An o-ring provides a reliable static or dynamic seal by deforming into its gland under assembly load.

Silicone delivers physiological inertness and low toxicity, very good compression set resistance across its range. It resists ozone and UV exposure, extreme heat and cold, and dry heat. The material carries a published service range of -80°F (-62.2°C) to 450°F (232.2°C). Applications involving steam above its rated range or hydrocarbon fuels and oils call for a different compound.
